NAME: Goosen Jansen (Van Oort) Van Noort
Arrived in New Amsterdam in "DeBever" on 9 May 1661 (captain was Pieter Reyerson). He was recorded as being from Beest in Gelderland. From the Dutch naming patterns, he may have been the son of a man named Jan in a village or area called Noort or Noord. He was probably a young man at the time, as he bound himself to Willen Hendricksz Brouwer as a journeyman shoemaker in Albany. Based on Brouwer's death (Aug 1663) it seems likely that Goosen was on his own after 1663; however, he may have been required to complete his legal tenure with the Brouwer family. No records have been recovered for Goosen from his bounding papers in Albany in 1661 until the baptismal records of his children show up in the Albany RDC from 1686 through 1692. He may have been in Schenectady by 1700, as a daughter's marriage indicates she was "of Schenectady". Daughters married later indicated they probably lived in New Amsterdam. It seems probable that Goosen was not a farmer, but a tradesman, probably a shoemaker, who lived in different towns the Dutch had established. The families with whom he associated also seemed to be those of tradesmen. The sequence of where he lived seems to be New Amsterdam, Albany, Schenectady, then New Amsterdam again. (This remains to be verified). There seems to have been no other Van Oort family in NA and NY at the time. Therefore, any children found are assumed to be his. It is assumed he was married only once to Maria Peek (after 1692, daughter of Jan Peek and Maria du Trieux.) She was identified in only one record, the baptism of her daughter, Antje, on 14 Aug 1692. Her relatives and family are known.
