Grew up after 1657 in Beverwyck (Albany) but returned to New Amsterdam when he became an adult. He was well-educated and served in several positions in the Colony, including Notary Public and Postmaster of New Amsterdam. On 29 Aug 1659, he m. (1) Wyntje Sybrante (c 1638/39 Amsterdam, Holland - divorced or dead by 1669), possible daughter of Sybrants Janszen and Lysbeth Adrains. (Wyntje poss. returned to Holland before her marriage to Willem was terminated.)
