He is listed as Michael A. Doherty (20, RI) a general agent for the Providence Reform School in 1860, where his future wife, Sarah, was also working in the laundry.
A resident of Newport, RI, he enlisted in Company A, Connecticut 8th Infantry Regiment on 30 Sep 1861.
Promoted to Full Comm Sergeant on 27 Mar 1862.
Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 17 Sep 1862.
Promoted to Full Quartermaster on 08 Jan 1863.
Mustered out on 13 Oct 1864.
Listed in the 1870 New York city directory, as an insurance salesman.
On 13 Dec 1881, Ambrose petitioned for his wife Sarah’s designation as insane (for 4 months). This was accepted by the Judge Isaac P. Fenton (her father) and a doctor and selectman appointed to investigate the matter. The petitioin was granted on the 26th Feb 1883, just after his death that year. Her father was then appointed adminstrator for probating his estate in Mansfield.

Listed in the 1860 census for Providence, RI working as a Laundry Matron (19, VT) at the Providence Reform School. Also listed is her sister Helen (24, VT) as an agent, and Michael A. Doherty (20, RI) a general agent.
They may have then lived near her parents in Mansfield after her marriage to Ambrose, once he completed his military duty.
Sarah and her two children are listed with her parents in the 1880 census.
On 13 Dec 1881, her husband, Ambrose, petitioned for her designation as insane (for 4 months). This was accepted by the Judge Isaac P. Fenton (her father) and a doctor and selectman appointed to investigate the matter. The petition was granted on the 26th Feb 1883, and she was to be delivered by her father to the hospital for the insane in Middletown.
Due to the death of her husband, Ambrose, her father Isaac was appointed administrator of his estate. And then on 3 Sept 1883, her father was also declared her guardian, since she was an inmate at the Hospital for the Insane at Middletown, CT.
