Herbert Walts Pioneer Family Member Passes
Herbert Walts, member of a pioneer Nevada family, died this morning at a local hospital. He would have been 90 year old on his next birthday.
For many years he was associated with his brothers in the land and livestock business, and later operated a service station in Reno. In recent years he had been retired.
He was born Nov. 3, 1871, at Milford, Calif., where his parents, William and Alive Steinberger Walts, had settled in the early days. In 1876 the family moved to the Truckee Meadows, residing for a time on the Matley ranch east of Reno. Herbert Walts and his brothers, Fred and Guy, acquired extensive land and livestock interests, including the home ranch south of Reno, the land now occupied by the Reno airport, and a vast acreage in the Dog Valley area.
Surviving are a son and daughter, Ray Walts, and Mrs. Fern Caldwell of Reno; four grandchildren, Patricia and Charles Caldwell and Peggy Anne and Robert R Walts; and a brother, Fred Walts. His brother Guy Walts, died in Reno in November, and a sister, Mrs. Bonnie Plath, died in December. He was a member of the neighbors of Woodcraft.
Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Ross-Burke Co.
