Listed in 1911 census as a lodger and book keeper at 19 in Sault Saint Marie, Catholic and of Scotish origin under the name Fred W. Wells.
He was drafted into the 1st Depot Battalion of the 1st Central Ontario Regiment on 6 Aug 1918.
Living in Sault Ste. Marie when he married Emma Verna Dyer (his cousin, once removed) of Port Hope on 9 Jun 1920 in the Methodist Church there. They are listed in the 1921 census, with him listed as of Scotch origin, and her of Irish origin; and his sister Lillian living with them. He is listed as a steelcham, and Lillian as a teacher.
Still listed in Port Hope in 1931 with wife Verna (39, Ont), working as an Insurance Agent
He is listed as an Insurance Agent in the 1949 Durham voters list.

WELLS, Fred W. - of 34 North Street, Port Hope, at Port Hope and District Hospital. Friday, March 26, 1971. Fred Wesley Wells, in his 79th year; son of the late William Wesley Wells and Mary Alice Macintosh; beloved husband of Irma Streebing and Verna Dyer by first marriage; loving brother of Kay (Mrs. E. J. Parker) and Ruby (Mrs. Howard Jackson) both of Ottawa, and Helen (Mrs. H. S. Pye) of Sherbrooke, Que; predeceased by sister Lillian (Mrs W. C. Sinclair) and brother Harold. Funeral was held at the Ross Funeral Home, Port Hope Monday, March 29, 2 pm. Interment in Port Hope Union Cemetery in the Spring.
