Listed in 1930 as a steamboat Pilot with his wife of one year, Phyllis M. Brewer (30 Jan 1907, WI - Feb 1978, Benton AR). Also listed in the census of Merchant Seamen that year as a steersman on the General Ashburn in the port of Minneapolis, with his wife living in Dubuque Co, IA.
In 1940, they are listed in Prescott, WI with George (36, WI) working as a steamboart captain, with Phyllis (33, WI) and son Jack (9, WI). It says they were living in Joliet, WI in 1935.
Worked on the river as an engineer, before becoming a professor of math/engineering at the University of Arkansas.

George P. Karnath, 71, of Beavorama Park, near Fayetteville, died Sunday while on a visit to Benton. Born June 2, 1903 at Fountain City, Wis., the son of Rudolph J. and Ida Gottlieb Karnath, he was a retired riverboat captaln, instructor of engineering at the University of Arkansas for 14 years, and a Lutheran.
He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Phyllis Brewer Karnath of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Judith Robertson of Benton; a son, Jack E. of Preston, Okla.; two brothers, Walter of Winona, Minn., and Rudolph of Hillsboro, Ore,: two sisters, Mrs. Elmer Loken of LeSueur, Minn, and six grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairview Memorial Park under the direction of Moore's Chapel.

MRS. PHYLLIS KARNATH
Mrs Phyllis Brewer Karnath, 71, of Benton, a former Fayetteville resident, died Sunday at hor home in Benton. Born Jan 30, 1907 at Prescott, WI, the daughter of John and Katherine Hoftender Brewer she had lived in Fayetteville 22 years before moving to Benton, was a Presbyterian and the widow of George P Karnath who died in 1975. She is survived by a son, Jack of Preston, OK, a daughter, Mrs Judith Robertson of Benton, two brothers. John Brewer, of Hasting, MN and Roy Brewer of Fountain City, WI a half sister, Mrs John Finley of Prescott and seven grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 10 am Wednesday at Fairview Memorial Gardens under the direction of Moore’s Chapel.
