Plucked from Earth’s Flower-Garden
Joseph Arthur, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Paine, of this place, was born May 16th, 1886, and his pleasant and genial child-like ways made him a father’s pride and a mother’s joy, while none knew the bright-eyed boy but to love him. Some two weeks ago the little one was taken ill of the whooping cough, and as the days wore on catarrhal fever set in, and the young life was endangered. The settling of another sun, and watchers at the little bedside shook their heads an could all but see the angels in their still approach. At nine o’clock on Monday evening, January 28th, the winged ones came and plucking little Arthur from earth’s perishing flower-garden, they bore their precious charge to that purer, sweeter clime beyond, and transplanted it upon those sunny banks whose myriads of flowers never, never wither. There may it bloom with the fairest of its kind.
Little Arthur’s funeral took place from the Presbyterian Church at 2 1/2 o’clock on Wednesday afternoon, the service being conducted by Rev. J. P. A. Dickey, pastor of said church, assisted by Rev. C. V. Plenkharp, pastor of the M. E. Church, the parents of the child being members of the former denomination. The funeral was largely attended, and the sermon of Rev. Dickey, which was a grand one in its way, was listened to with rapt attention, his arguments showing why ’twere better in many instances to die young, being very strong and convincing upon the mind. At the close of the service an opportunity was given those in attendance to take a farewell look at the little sleeper who would awake to no more on earth. Ah! how peaceful seemed that sleep! and how loving and inviting its seductive charms!
Then followed the funeral cortege — the journey from the church to the beautiful cemetery on the hill, south of town, and the remains of little Arthur wer laid away in the “city of the dead.” The grief-stricken parents and sorrowing friends have the sympathy of the entire community in the loss of one so dear, so tender, so loving.
