He was born in what is now Kaunas, Lithuania, but at the time of his birth the city was known by its Russian name, Kovni. It was part of the Russian Empire from 1843 to 1915.
Listed as Elias Friedland, a lodger (25, RUS) with his wife Ernestine in the 1871 England census.
Elias moved to Jamaica briefly then immigrated permanently to Canada.
Elias Friedlander is listed in the 1891 Montreal census as a hebrew minister (40, GER), with wife Ernestine (36, GER) and children Leopold (19, ENG), Anna (18, ENG), Abraham ( 15, ENG), and Clara A. (7, QUE)
Listed as a Hebrew rabbi (58, GER) in the 1901 Canad census, with his wife and 3 youngest children.
In 1921 he is listed as widowed, retired and Jewish (73, LITH) born in Airiogala Lithuania, immigrated to Canada in 1883, and naturalized as a Canadian in 1915.

Late Rev. Dr. Friedlander Served in Many Canadian Synagogues
After an illness of some months, Rev. Dr. Elias Friedlander, retired rabbi of the Jewish Church, passed away this moruing at the Royal Jubilee hospital at the age of seventy-eight years. Born in Russia, the late Dr. Friedlander went to England as a young man and for over fifty years has been a naturalized British subject. He was associated with synagogues In England before going to Jamaica, West Indies, where he was rabbi for four years. Nearly forty years ago he came to Canada, and was chief rabbi at Montreal for about eighteen years, later going to Winnipeg. For fourteen' years Dr. Friedlander was rabbi for the Victoria and Vancouver Jewish congregations retiring into private life fifteen years ago, since which time he has made his home in this city. He leaves two sons in the United States and one daughter, Mrs. Frankenburg of Vancouver. The remains are reposing at the B.C. Funeral Chapel pending funeral arrangements which will be announced later.

FRIEDLANDER, Mrs. E., née Ernestine Finkelstein, age 65, wife of Rabbi Elias Friedlander, formerly of Montreal, died on Sat. Nov. 29, 1904, at the Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. In recent years she had been in ill health but her death came about as a result of an accident in which she fractured a limb while descending a stairway. Born in Germany she came to the United States with her husband and family from England, about twenty-five years ago. She is survived by her husband, a son and two daughters.
