Misc. Notes
To the question why the 3 brothers emigrated, it can be said that Sweden at that time was a very poor country. More than a million Swedes emigrated, mostly because of lack of work. John R. Lubeck, who was the first to leave Sweden, might have done well and encouraged his brothers to come too.
He seens to have first arrived in New York on 19 Jun 1891 aboard the ship Germanic from Liverpool, England; being listed as Johan Liback. It says he originated in Finland, was age 19 (as was a whole group listed with him), and destined for Astoria (city in Oregon?).
John originally immigrated in in 1889, according to the 1910 census, and he was naturalized on 23 Oct 1896 in Connecticut.
On a return visit, he left Denmark on 30 Nov 1904, and arrived in New York on the 13th of December, with his brother Adolf.
He is listed in the 1910 census, with his wife of 2 yrs, Elizabeth (26, SWE) who had immigrated in 1887. He is listed as a (marine) Engineer (41, SWE) and naturalized after having immigrated in 1889.
By 1920 they had moved to Tracy in the central valley, where he is listed as an engineer (51, SWE) for the irrigation district, having immigrated in 1891 and naturalized in 1896. His wife, Elizatabeth A. (36, SWE) both immigrated and was naturalized in 1884. With them were daugher Florence (9, CA) and son John Jr (2 yr 9 mos, CA).
Listed as age 71 in the 1940 census, with his wife (55) and son John Jr (22, CA).
Listed as being in the US military, 13 Apr 1920 - 30 Sep 1921, and is buried in the Golden Gate National cemetery in San Bruno, with a listing of Lieutenant JG in the Navy on his headstone. His wife is also buried there.
