Catherine was born in Old Monmouth County, now Ocean County, to Jacob Lane and Alice Chamberlain. She was the wife of John Holmes Jr. of Forked River, NJ, with whom she had nine children. Following the death of her husband in 1832, Catherine traveled west as did six of her children: Stephen, Jacob, William, Mariah, Gilbert, and Catherine. Joseph and Alice remained in NJ; daughter Nancy died in 1820.
