[Obituary] Red Bank Register - Wed, 23 July 1890
William S. Smock, one of the oldest business men in Red Bank and a highly respected citizen, died suddenly at his home on East Front street on Sunday night, aged 67 years and nine months. Death was caused by aneurism of the heart.
Mr. Smock was born in this county and had lived in Red Bank nearly all his life. He learned the harness-making trade at Matawan 45 years ago and had been in that business ever since.
He married Miss Elizabeth A. Vanderveer, a daughter of Elias Vanderveer, of Atlantic township, and besides the widow, five children survive him. The children are Marshall, who worked with his father; R. Taylor, a dry goods merchant at Red Bank; Sarah, wife of Charles Kingman, of New York; William, who is employed in New York, and Ella, the youngest child who lives at home.
Mr. Smock was a square businessman, honest in his dealings, and his hours with his family were delightful pastimes. He was one of the founders and for many years a member of the board of trustees of the Presbyterian church. He left the church and joined Grace Methodist Church, of which he was a trustee.
The funeral was held at the house this afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. George S. Sykes officiating. The interment was in Fair View cemetery.
