His family moved from PA to Richland Co. OH ca. 1839. He is supposed to have served with the 3rd OH in the Mexican War (1845) according to Hardesty’s Encyclopedia and his headstone has the inscription Corpl Co H 44 IN Inf. He was an executor of his father's will.
Henry was US Marshal in the Utah Terr. with an appointment dated 8 May 1860, and lived in the part that was to become Nevada Terr. (he arrived there in October). When Congress carved the Nevada Territory out of Utah in 1861, U.S. Marshal Henry Grice promptly resigned, but not from any principled objection to the redistricting. Rather, the change "renders the amount of business transacted in [Utah] by the Marshal so limited that it would not justify me in holding the office." as written in his letter to President Lincoln.
C. W. Torrance, Hist. of Masons in NV (1944) indicates he was active in the Carson City Masonic Lodge #1 in 1862 when it was formed. That same year he is listed in the Nevada directory as Henry Grice, U.S. Marshall, Utah Territory Office, Carson Near Penrod House.
He is on a list of voters in Carson City 1866, Gayle Snyder has a photo of him taken in Carson City in 1867, and he is mentioned in the newspaper there in 1870.
In 1871 he was listed as registered to vote in San Joaquin county, California; and from 1872 thru 1882 he is listed on lists of registered voters in Sacramento, CA. and is buried in the City cemetery there.

The Sacramento Bee says that Henry Grice, who left Mansfield in 1850, took an overdose of morphine and died from its effect on the 6th inst (instance?), at Sacramento, aged 62 years. He was connected with the State Fair Association at that city. His mother resides near Pavonia. and is aged near ninety years.
