Fayette Co History - The old Franklin Twp schoolhouse was built in 1821. The first teacher was William Symms and among his pupils was a James Ghrist. James Ghrist was listed as the auditor for Franklin Twp in Fayette Co during 1859. On Feb 4, 1860 James Grist contracted to lay the brick in the Brownsville Union school house at $3.00 per thousand.
Knox Co History - was born in Fayette Co, Pa and migrated with his parents to Richland Co, OH in 1840. At age 18 he learned the Tailor trade in Galion (1847). In 1851 he returned to PA, probably Fayette Co and then some years in Westmoreland Co. He served in the Civil War in the 15th PA V. I. and Co. K, Reg 206th PA V.I. In 1876 he returned to Richland Co, living in Bellville and Independence (Butler). In 1878 he moved to Fredericktown in Knox Co. He was a member of the Fredericktown Baptist Church.
He is listed in Mt Pleasant of Westmoreland Co, PA in 1870, as a tailor (40, PA) with Sarah L. (40, PA) and children Thomas E. (14, PA), and Clara M. (12). Sarah’s sister Jane Latimer (30, PA) is living with them as a housekeeper.
1880 census lists him as J. F. Ghrist (50) a merchant tailor living on Main St. next door to George W. Wells in Fredericktown. With him is his wife, son and daughter.

Her headstone says she was born in 1829, her death record says 1830 and her obituary says 1831.
Listed in 1850 as Sarah Lattimore (19, PA) with her parents James Lattimore (60, ENG) and Jane (Lennon) Lattimore (50, ENG), as well as 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
In 1870, Sarah’s sister, Jane Latimer (30, PA) is living with them as a housekeeper.
By 1900 she had moved to Lima, OH and is widowed (70, PA) with 2 of her 3 children living, and with her - Clara (41) and Orlando (28).
In 1910 she is listed as widowed (80, PA) head of household, and living with her daughter Clara (42, PA) who was still single.

MRS SARAH GHRIST DIES ON EVE OF EIGHTY-SEVENTH YEAR
Brother or Miss Clara Ghrist Would Have Celebrated Her Birthday Tomorrow Had She Lived.
Mrs Sarah L. Christ, No 101 Diamond avenue died at her home last evening at 10 o’clock from a complication of diseases. She has been an invalid for three years.
Mrs Christ was born in Fayette county Pennsylvania September 24 1831 and would have been eighty-seven years old Monday. Mrs Ghrlst has been a widow for twenty-six years.
She Is survived by one daughter, a sister, and a nephew. Miss Clara Ghrist Lima is the daughter. Funeral arrangements will be announced later .
