Listed as age 14 in the 1850 census with his parents.
Lived near Avon, Iowa. In the 1860 census he is listed (24) as a farm laborer with his wife Eliza in the home of her father, Abijah Kenworthy.
Records show him as enlisting in Company B, Iowa 39th Infantry Regiment on 26 Aug 1862. He was mustered out on 25 Mar 1865 at Indianapolis, IN. He died of disease contracted in the service (Civil War) according to a Knox county history about his brother Henry. Wife, Eliza was granted a pension of $8/mo. His daughter, Effa Anetta was listed in his father's will.
Cemetery record lists him as C. S. Gaddis and his death 10 Apr 1867, age 28 yrs, 9 mos, 7 days. Based on his previous birth year of 1836 and death on 10 Apr 1865, I have assumed the 1867 is in error.
