From a Knox County history:
"Henry Monroe Gaddis enlisted at Bellville, Richland Co, OH May 2, 1864 in Company D, 163rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 2d brigade, 2d division, 2d army corps. From private he was promoted to corporal at the organization of the company, at Columbus, OH. His regiment went to Washington, DC May 10th, then at once to Fort Reno, five miles northwest of Washington, to do garrison duty until June 8th, when they were taken to Fortress Monroe and to White House Landing; thence to Point of Rocks, on the Appomattox river, near Petersburg and Richmond, to tear up the track, and thus prevent General Lee from reinforcing his army in front of Petersburg. They drove the enemy's forces from the road, and tore up and destroyed one and a half miles of the track. June 17th they engaged in throwing up breastworks at Fort Pocahontas, on James river, in building abattis. Worn out by severe fatigue duty and exposure, he was sent to the hospital at Hampton, Virginia, remaining there until about the 10th of September, 1864, when he joined his regiment and went with them to Columbus, OH, where he was honorably discharged, having served four months and ten days. Cornelius S. Gaddis died April 10, 1865, in Richland county, from disease contracted in the service. A pension has been granted to Eliza Gaddis of eight dollars per month. Henry Monroe Gaddis was born in Jefferson township, June 9, 1840, a son of David and Rachael (Murphy) Gaddis. He married at Bellville, January 2, 1862, Emily R., a daughter of Nimrod and Mary (Richards) Newlon, born in Richland county, July 17, 1837. They have five children, born: Ida A., August 5, 1863; Verdie A., December 2, 1866; Frances Orilla, May 14, 1870; Maggie Olive, May 9, 1872; and Walden Leroy, July 23, 1876. Mr. Gaddis had also twin children born August 4, 1878; both died during the month of August, 1878. Mr. Gaddis is a sewing machine agent at Bellville."
