According to the "Portrait & Biographical Record of Guernsey Co, Ohio" John is the 10th child of James. Listed as 14 with his mother in 1850 Fayette Co PA census. They then moved to Noble Co, OH where he was married in 1860; and listed as a farm hand with his new bride in the census later that year.
They were listed again in Beaver Twp, Noble Co in 1870 with 4 children and two helpers. They had moved to Guernsey Co, OH by the time his dau Minnie was born. His nephew James N. Wells and nieces Mary and Westanna, children of his brother William, were all placed under his guardianship on 26 Nov 1879 by the Guernsey Co Probate Court, OH. His wife Ann, apparently died, as he was remarried to Nancy Turkle in Dec 1879 and had one more child with her.
1880 census lists him (44) with his 2nd wife Nancy, and all 6 surviving children from his first wife. The children of his brother, for whom he was guardian, are not listed.
He is listed with his wife Nancy and son James in Oxford, Guernsey Co, OH in 1900. They lived in Fairview for a while after his second marriage, then moved near their son James for a time. In 1910, John (74, PA) is listed as doing general farming with Nancy (72, OH) and are listed together next to the family of their son James in Ashtabula Co. It says it is the second marriage for both of them, and that they had been married 30 yrs.
