Emily was the daughter of Lucius Jackson and Mary Middlebrook, natives of Conn. She was a valued member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and well liked by all who knew her.

Obtained a common school education. Moved to Knox Co, Ohio with his family in 1850, where he married. Moved to Iowa in 1856 and selected Fairview Twp, where he purchased 80 Acres near the town of Colfax. He was sucessful in its cultivation and in 1861 deposited $800 in a Newton bank. While he was subsequently visiting Ohio, the bank failed and he lost all of it.
In 1870 he is listed as J Scarbrough with his wife and 6 children.
He is listed as Jackson Scarbroug in 1880 with his wife Emily and children Clarence thru Charles.
He purchased the 230 Acres the he was living on in 1894 (Sect 18) and improved it to a value of $80/Ac.
In 1900 he is listed with his second wife, Harriet (58, OH), no children. He was a staunch Republican and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, where he was a steward and Superintendent of the Sunday-school for many years. They had eight children, two of whom died in infancy.
