In 1850 he is listed as John Scarborough (21, PA) a mason, living with the family of Moses Drake, a stone mason from New Jersey. This is just before his marriage to Elizabeth.
He and Elizabeth are listed next to her parents as J. and E. Searbaugh. He (30, PA) a stone mason, and her (27, OH).
He is listed as a hotel landlord (40, PA) in Mansfield, OH in 1870, with his wife Elizabeth (37, OH) and a young girl Mary A. Scarbrough (13, OH) who was not listed with them in 1860; perhaps a niece.
In 1880 he is listed on Third St in Newark, OH as a Hotel Keeper (49, PA) with Elizabeth (45, OH).
Listed in 1900 census in Fredericktown, OH as a landlord (Dec 1827, PA) with his wife Elizabeth (May 1832, OH). They are living with the family of George and Mary Scarbrough, his nephew.

John Scarborough was born in Brownsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Dec 27, 1827. In 1847 he moved to Mt Vernon, Ohio where he was married to Mariah Phillips on December 26, 1850.
In 1898, at the home of his (adopted?) daughter in Chicago he had a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered. Last spring he and his wife came to Newton hoping the change might be beneficial to him, but he got no better and continued to decline unitl death ended his suffering on the morning of 17 August 1901.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. John Ferguson of the United Presbyterian church at the home of T. R. Phillips, last Sunday morning, after which the remains were taken to Monroe for interment.
