Her mother's name is Ester (b. VT), and 1880 census shows her father as being born in NY.

Mary J. Grice is listed in the 1920 census for Richland Twp, Whitley Co, IN by herself and widowed at age 87.
Her will, written 12 Sept 1920, was submitted to probate on 22 Mar 1923 in Columbia, Whitley Co, IN.

Mary J. Grice Dies At Soldiers' Home
Mary J. Grice died at the Soldiers' Home, Friday morning death being due to heart disease.
She was born December 18, 1838 in Pennsylvania, and entered the home from Whitley, Ind., in 1921. She was the widow of Josenh Grice, who was a member of Co. H. 44th Indiana infantry.
No relatives survive. The body has been forwarded to Larwill, Ind., for burial.

He is listed as Joseph Ghrise (22, PA) with his brother in Ashland County in that census as a (wood) turner, boarding with the Goodwin family.
Is recorded as being married to Mary Jane Stuckman on 4 Dec 1851 and recorded on 25 Dec 1851.
Was a painter. Moved to Adams Co, Indiana after his marriage.
1855 Wayne Co land records list Joseph and his wife selling land in Congress Twp to a Peter Eicher (Wayne Co Recorder, Wooster OH; Vol 43, pg 647). The record was signed by Joseph, his wife Mary Jane, and Ann Stuckman. The next entry was Esther Stuckman (Mary Jane's mother) selling adjoining land to a Peter Eicher. The transactions were made while these people were living in Adams Co, Indiana.
Listed in 1860 census as Joseph Griser (34, PA) with his wife and 3 children.
He served with the 44th Indiana Vol Infantry in the Civil War, and was a Corporal based on his headstone. Had a dau named Clara and one son.
And then as Joseph Grier (43, PA) in 1870.
In 1880 he is listed as Joseph Grice (52, PA) with his wife (47), as a Cooper, living in Johnson, Indiana.
Their son Willie died 18 January 1881, aged 23 years 2 months 9 days and is buried in Lakeview Cem - along with his father.
Daughter Della died 7 Apr 1890, aged 30 years, 1 month 19 days and is buried with her brother.
In 1900 and 1910 they have an adopted daughter, Ester living with them, and show none of their 5 children as still alive.
On June 10, 1911 his widow filed for Civil War Pension benefits. His headstone in the Lakeview cemetery lists him as Corp Joseph Grice.
