James S. Grimes was born in Fayette county, Pa., May 27, 1824, and died at 9:35 a.m., July 2, 1905, age 81 years, 1 month and 5 days. In 1850 he was married to Margaret Ann Laughlin. They lived in Pennsylvania until 1871 when they came west and settled near Huron. In 1902 his wife was called home and since that time he has made his home with his son, Hugh, but often visiting his other children. He had visited all his surviving children in less than a week from the time of his death. Mr. Grimes was the father of seven children, one of whom, Henry, was buried in Pennsylvania and one Elizabeth Meeker, wife of Caleb Meeker, was buried in the Old Huron cemetery in 1887. The remaining five Robert, William, John, Hugh and Sallie Hardin, wife of Elehu Hardin were all present when the end came. In 1874 he joined the Methodist Protestant church at Old Huron. He was noted for kindness to his neighbors and would at any time discommode himself to accommodate a neighbor.
