[Obituary] Daily Press - 1 Sept 2011
AUSTIN ARTHUR GADDIS 7/10/31 - 8/28/2011 Austin Arthur Gaddis was born in Columbus, Ohio on July 10, 1931. He was the first of five children born to Richard and Anna Gaddis. At a young age he came to know Christ as his Savior. On August 28, 2011, Austin went to meet Jesus. Austin is survived by his wife, Vellajane; two sons, Bruce and Brent; granddaughters, Amy and Cierra; his siblings, Karen Casteel, Sarah Plants, Marilyn Weber and Richard Gaddis II and many nieces and nephews. Austin's life on earth was one of service. He enlisted in the National Guard of Ohio and went on to active duty with the United States Army. He went on to become Administrative Assistant for General Hensley in Ft. Benning, Georgia. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Austin completed his formal education at Ohio State University. There he became a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1961. Beginning his career with the U.S.D.A., he did Brucellosis testing on cattle in the Central Valley of California. After moving to Southern California, Austin fulfilled a lifelong dream of opening his own small animal private practice in the West Los Angeles area. He served the Los Angeles area for 25 years before moving his family and his practice to the High Desert in 1984. Austin continued to serve the High Desert community even after he sold his practice in 2007. He encouraged young people to seek an education and a career in which would benefit others. Consequently, he had former employees continue their education, several of these employees have gone on to become Veterinarians. Austin enjoyed riding his Goldwing and flying his Piper Cherokee. He and Vellajane, his wife of 59 years, served on a Work and Witness Team in the Dominican Republic in 1984 and he enjoyed his trips abroad as well as stateside. Austin was a member of the Church of the Nazarene as well as The American Veterinary Association, The California Veterinary Medical Association and the Orange Belt Veterinary Medical Association. "Dr. G" will be sadly missed by many pet owners, friends and family. Scheduled services will be Saturday, September 3rd at 2:00p.m. at Sunset Hills in Apple Valley, 24000 Waalew Rd., Apple Valley CA.
