[Obituary] Mt Vernon News - 22 Oct 2007
BELLVILLE — G. Eulala Woodward, 99, of Bellville went to be with the Lord Saturday morning, Oct. 20, 2007, in Country Court Nursing Center in Mount Vernon.
She was born Nov. 28, 1907, in Bellville to John Herman and Iva M. (Gaddis) Durbin, was graduated from Bellville High School in 1926, and earned her teaching certificate in 1927. A lifelong Bellville resident, she began her teaching career at South School, a one-room schoolhouse, in September 1927. And the following year, on Aug. 25, 1928, she married Homer D. Woodward.
A beloved teacher and mentor to students as well as other teachers, Eulala continued to teach for nearly 40 years. Most of those years were spent at the Bellville school teaching second grade. Educationally minded, Eulala returned to college. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Ashland University.
She was a member of the Palmyra Church of Christ and Pythian Sisters of Bellville, and formerly a member of many community area clubs including the Sunny South Club, Alta’s Garden Club, the Bellville-Butler Music Club and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. Eulala was a member of the Fun ’n Friendship Club, and was active in the club’s “Hee-Haw” show, produced for many years — and performed over 100 times all over Ohio.
Eulala and Homer loved to travel, and crossed the country extensively. Her extensive photo and slide collection details her travels to Hawaii, and their many winters in Fort Meade, Fla.
She is survived by her sister-in-law. Eileen Durbin; nephews and nieces. Gary and Joan Durbin of Berea, Donavon and Deborah Durbin of Gahanna, Herbert and Betty Lou Woodward of Bellville, Howard Woodward of Gambier, Chester Woodward of Lexington, Donna and Bob Benge of Pataskala, and Dorothy Fuller of Butler; along with numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
Her husband Homer preceded her in death on July 7, 1987. Also deceased are a brother and sister-in-law, Lewis “Red” and Bessie Durbin; a brother, Wayne Durbin; and a niece, Loretta Phillips.
