His name is printed with either a "II" or Y or N as the middle initial. IGI shows it as a V, as does 1880 census and his probate record.
According to a letter written by his uncle Benjamin, he enlisted in the 3rd Ohio Regiment and fought in the Perrysville, KY battle.
Listed adjacent to his grandmother in 1870 with his wife and 3 kids. Listed near Enos and Margaret in 1880 with his 4 sons and no wife - indicating that she died or they were divorced.
He was living in Purity, OH in 1892 when his father died.
His probate accounting was done by Rebecca Moats, his executor and (2nd)wife.
d. 57 yr, 27 d according to Nancy Dusenbury from death records - I had birth year as 1836.
Death record says he died of La Greppe? Probably meaning La Grippe (influenza), but that term is associated with the 1918 Pandemic.
Obit says “Eden Twp. David Moats, a farmer died Sat. after a lingering illness. Aged 57 years” according to Nancy Dusenbury.

She is listed as head of household with her step-son, Wallace in 1900, confirming that she is second wife named Rebecca of David Moats, and widowed after his death.
Obituary says she was born 23 April 1843. That plus the statement that they had no children points to David Moats having two wives named Rebecca. It says they were married on 1 Apr 1883 and he died 2 Dec 1893. She left five brothers and was a faithful member of the Disciple Church.
Cemetery record also lists her year of birth as 1843, confirming that she was his second wife.
