Mabel Catherine Moats was born March 2, 1919 and attended school in Vincent throughout the eighth grade, graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1935. She attended Eagle Grove Junior College where she received her training certificate and taught in a country school for one and one-half years near Vincent Iowa. She later graduated from Eagle Grove junior college and attended Drake University, Des Moines, graduating in 1959 with a bachelors degree. Graduated with a BS degree June 2, 1963 from Drake University. She attended the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colo. obtaining her masters degree in 1969 in special education. Mabel was one of the first three special education teachers to teach in Iowa, retiring at age 60. She was a member of United Methodist Women, Equality Club, night circle. River Valley Rock Hound Club, Business and Professional Women's Club, National Education association, Iowa State Education Association, and Association for retarded Citizens.
Her father Clayton M. Moats was killed in an electrical accident installing electricity to Thor, Iowa when she was 7 years old. Mabel's mother was a school teacher and Mabel followed her into teaching.
Mabel and Herb donated their bodies to Science through the Iowa Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines Iowa. Mabel loved her family and there was nothing she wouldn't do for them. Herb was the light of her life.
