They had eleven children, according to Pearl Starkey. His parents were Christopher Swartz and Elizabeth Harper according to Linda Calvin. Christopher was b. ca. 1800 to Conrad and Suzanne (of PA) Swartz. It was anglicized from Swartz (german for black) to Black.
In 1850 there is a John Black, age 24, a farmer born in Ohio. He is listed with Mary Scott, age 24, born in Ohio. They are listed together with no one else. 1860 census lists him with his wife Sarah, 3 daus, 2 sons and brother Samuel W. Black. His name appears to be John N. Black. The next listing appears to be the family of Sarah's brother.
In 1870 John (45, OH) is listed as a farm laborer, with his wife Sarah (40, OH) and children Margaret (18), Samuel (17), Jennet (14), Mary (11), Emma (7), John (4) and Amanda (2). They are living adjacent to Sarah’s father Wm Oldham (74, PA)
He is listed in the 1880 census with his wife, 4 sons and 3 daughters.
