Listed as a carpenter with his mother in 1880.
Married to Mary Ellen Toler on 1 July 1880. Their first child was Mary Anne (Mae) born 25 May 1881 Cairo IL - died 18 Nov 1965 San Francisco. James P. English was born 2 Nov 1882 in Cairo and died 21 Dec 1885. Richard E. English born 19 Sept 1883, Cairo and died 21 Sept 1893. Margaret English was born 10 April 1886, Kansas City, MO where the family was living while Richard was building Railroad stations for the Illinois Central. They moved across the street to Kansas City, KS, where William J. English was born 28 April 1888 (died 30 October 1957 in San Bruno, California). They moved back to 704 34th St in Cairo where Catherine was born 16 April 1890, died 30 Aug 1917. Louise was born 14 Sept 1893, one week before Richard Jr. died and she always felt guilty about it. She died in Alameda, California and was the last surviving member of the family. Edith was born 14 Nov 1895 and lived a great deal of her life in the Chicago area where she married Edward McDonald and raised a large family. Geraldine was born 31 Jan 1898 and died 15 May 1898. Evelyn Veronica was born 18 April 1900 - had 7 children and outlived three husbands. She died in San Francisco 10 Dec 1973.
In 1900 they are still in Cairo, where he is listed as a carpenter (Jun 1850, NFLD) married 20 yrs with 7 of his 10 children still living. With him is wife, Mary (Mar 1861, IL), Mamie (May 1881, IL), Maggie (Apr 1886, KS), Wm (Apr 1888, KS), Katie (Apr 1890, IL), Louise (Sep 1892, IL), Edith (Nov 1895, IL), Evelyn (Apr 1900, IL).
After moving to San Francisco in 1904, he is listed in the 1910 census as a carpenter (55, CAN) with his wife Mary (49, IL) and children William (22, MO), Louise (17, IL), Edith (14, IL) and Evelyn (10, IL).
On March 4th 1915, while estimating the cost of a new slate roof for the owners of the LeGrande Laundry, Richard English fell off the roof, landing on his head and was killed instantly. His brother William was with him and heard him fall. Mary and her two daughters, Edith and Evelyn, then moved to 135 Eureka St and later to 631 Castro St.

ENGLISH - In this city, March 2, Richard E., dearly beloved husband of Mary E. English, loving father of Mrs. E. Palmer, Mrs. G. Gilier, William J. English, Mrs. C. D. Everett, Mrs. C. A. Burnham and Edith and Evelyn English, and brother of William A. English, a native of St. John’s, Newfoundland, aged 61 years, 9 months and 1 day.
Friends and acquaintences are resepectfully invilted to attend the funeral Thursday, at 8:30 o’clock, from the chapel of Julius S. Godeau, 41 Van Ness ave.; thence to Holy Redeemer Church, where a mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul, commencing at 9 o’clock. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery.

Most records list her birth as 1862, but the 1900 census lists it as Mar 1861.
After her husband’s death in California, she was living with the family of daughter Edith McDonald in Chicago in 1920.
Mary later married Phillip Kronberg and lived happily with him at 172 6th St in the Dudly Stone Apartments where she died of heart failure on 22 Jan 1945. Her husband, Phil died a short time later.
