Son of William English and Catharine Phelan
He is from Solloghodmore Parish, county Tipperary, Clan William, Ireland. In 1832 the tithe applotment book for Solloghodmore shows Richard English farming 5.5 acres of 3rd quality land on the estate of the earl of Derby.
Family history says Richard was in a Catholic seminary in France, studying to be a priest. While home on a vacation, he met Annie at a well where she was drawing water. And that Richard came from well-to-do merchant parents, and that they disowned him due to his marriage. They supposedly left St Johns just after Richard was born and never returned. Other family lore is that when he died, he had property in Chicago that went for taxes since his family didn't know about it. They went to court in Chicago to try to regain it and lost. Also that he could have worked for the Illinois Central RR, building RR Stations. [from Tom Suttles]
