Misc. Notes
Birth Cert and marriage record lists his name as John C. Wells.
John (age 6) and his brother Charles (9) are listed with their mother and step-father in the 1880 census, using the Hammond surname.
S. S. Tuttle was appointed his guardian 6 May 1889 due to the death of his father, even though he was living with his mother and step-father; possibly to manage the military pension funds. John was entitled to a $25 pension because of his fathers service in the "War of the Rebellion". Guardian papers list his birthday as Oct 15th, but pension papers have date of the 5th.
His marriage license in 1893 was signed by his mother, Malissa Hammond - he was 19.
Listed on North Sandusky St in 1900 census as age 26 (Oct 1873), a day laborer in Mt Vernon renting his own home. Also listed is his wife and 2 daughters, all born in Ohio. They had been married 7 years, and both of their 2 children were living. He apparently separated from his wife shortly thereafter, as their 1907 divorce proceeding states that they had been living apart for over 3 years. He did not appear or contest the divorce, and Belle was given full custody of the girls.
Listed as age 33, divorced and living with his widowed mother on W. Chestnut St in 1910. He is listed as a helper in an Engine Works.
His death certificate says he was working for the St Louis & San Francisco railroad when he died of stomach cancer at Sparks Memoral Hospital in Ft Smith, AR. The info was submitted by his brother.
