Listed in 1880 as head of household, age 58 born Vermont, both parents Vermont, with children Enoch and his wife Minnie, Florence, and Cassie.
She is listed with her son Walter in 1900 census, a widow born Apr 1832 (78) in Vermont, with 9 of her 13 children still living.
Her obituary from the Chateaugay Record was found pasted to an old ledger, kept by H. H. Hill, when he was Justice of the Peace, Chateaugay NY in 1874 to 1907 (dates taken from records found in the ledger), on this date: May 5, 1982 by H. H. Hill’s great-granddaughter, Vivian LaBarge Garceau of Malone NY.
“After an illness of only six days Mrs. David Hill died on Thursday evening of last week at 7:30 o’clock. Mrs. Hill’s maiden name was Miss Sarah White, and she was born in Georgia, VT April 6, 1821. In 1841 she married David R. Hill and came to Chateaugay the same year. She settled, with her husband in 1844 on the farm which has ever since been her home. She was a woman who was beloved by all and her death is deeply mourned. She is survived by the following sorrowing family: Talbert W. Hill of Tama, Iowa; Adaline Fiske of Greenleaf, Kansas; Enoch Hill of Thetford, VT; Mrs. N. L. Wing of Lyme Center, NH; Florence A. Hill of Washington, DC; and Walter D. and Cassie L. Hill of Chateaugay. Funeral services were held from her late home on Monday at 10:30, with internment at Sandy Knoll.”
Her death certificate lists her as age 87 yrs, 11 mos, 19 days old, and living in Chateaugay for 68 years (since 1841). She was a widow and died of vascular heart disease. It also lists her birthplace and both parents - info from her daughter Cassie.
Following her death, their son Walter acted as executor of the combined estate of David and Sally Hill. He posted notices in the Aug 6 and Aug 13 copies of the “Chateaugay Record and Franklin County Democrat” (weekly) for his sale at public auction of parcels of land containing 20 Ac and 26 Ac of Lot 27, and 52 Acres of Great Lot #85 in General Division of Twp 7 of the Old Military Tract.

David was a member of the Georgia (VT) local militia, the 5th Battalion, 11th Regiment. He and Sally moved to Chateaugay, NY in 1841 and in 1844 settled on the farm where they spent the rest of their lives. A large group of the family including David’s father and several brothers, also settled in Chateaugay. He is said to have worked in the Customs House for a time, but they have no records for this period which would verify this family story.
David and Sally bought the farm over a period of years. On Jan. 21, 1847 they bought a part of lot #77, being 33 1/3 acres, for $100 from Henry and Eli Smith.
Listed in 1850 (30) a farmer with $200 of land, born in VT, with his wife Sarah (29) and children Laura thru Albert.
On Apr. 20, 1854 they bought 26 acres of the same lot from the Smiths for $75 and on May 4, 1857 they bought 22 acres more of lot #77 for $120. Starting in 1853 David worked at the Custom House at Lake Champlain for seven seasons, leaving his wife and children to run the farm.
Listed in 1860 (40) as a farmer with $1,500 of land and $800 pers prop, with his wife Sarah (38) and children Luany thru Florence.
Listed in 1870 at age 50, a farmer with $2,000 of land and $600 of personal property, and born in Vermont. With his wife Sarah (49) also born in Vermont, and their children Albert thru Cassa.
His family is listed in the 1875 state census for Chateaugay. He (56) and Sarah (54) both born in Vermont, along with Enoch (21), Walter (18), and Florence (14) all born in Franklin Co.
He died early in 1880 of diabetes, and is buried with his wife and son Walter; only 2 miles from the Canadian border in Sandy Knoll Cemetery. His tombstone lists his birth as 1819 and death as 13 Mar 1880.
David left a will which was not probated until after Sally's death. At the time of David's death, Sally was appointed administratrix and she filed a detailed inventory of personal assets which lists items totaling $471.48. No real estate was included.
In the Aug 6, 1909 "Chateaugay Recorder and Franklin County Democrat" weekly paper is Walter D. Hill's executor notice for the estate of David Hill.
