Misc. Notes
Enoch first appears in records of town meetings in 1817 when he took the Freeman's Oath. He was elected hayward in 1818, surveyor of highways in 1823, school trustee in 1824, and in 1832 he again served as surveyor of highways. In 1838 he was chosen as grand juror. The record states "Mr. White appeared and utterly refused to serve as grand juror. Voted to excuse Mr. White." He served as highway surveyor in 1847, 1865, and 1867 through 1871.
Listed in the 1820 census records for Georgia, Franklin Co VT as:
males 1<10, 1=18-26
female 1=16-26
The Feb. 8 1827 issue of the Repertory, a St. Albans, VT newspaper, carried the following notice: "Ran away, from the Subscriber, an indentured Boy, named Leonard Tisdale. I being his lawful guardian, hereby forbid any persons harbouring or trusting him on my account from this date; and hereby offer one cent reward to any person who will return said bay to me. Enoch White. Georgia, Feb. 5 1827." Leonard Tisdale, born 1810, was brother to Enoch's wife, Adaline.
In 1830 he is in the same location near Sylvester, David and Denison White with:
males 2<5, 1=5-10, 1=30-40
female 2<5, 2=5-10, 1=30-40
Enoch purchased several parcels of land in Georgia in the 1820's and 1830's jointly with his brother John Kinney White. On May 23 1820 they bought fifty acres from Moses Barber for $187; on Apr. 5 1824, 150 acres on the southern border of their father's farm from Henry McGloplin for $150; on Mar. 1, 1826, 60 acres of land, bounded by the lake shore on the west, from Daniel Dinsmore for $600; on Apr. 9 1830, 30 acres off from the north side of the farm formerly owned by Jonathan Hill for $400; on May 21 1836, that farm now occupied by Lyman Hill lying near the lake shore in Georgia for $500.
In 1840 he is listed with:
males 2<5, 1=5-10, 2=10-15, 1=20-30, 1=40-50
female 1<5, 1=10-15, 2=15-20, 1=20-30, 1=40-50
Living near him are John K. White (younger), David and Sylvester White (both 60-70) and David Jr.
Also nearby are Ansel B. Hill (---1-1,---11-1) and Lyman Hill (-21-1-1,2--12-1).

On Dec. 24 1845 town land records show three land transactions which apparently had the effect of dividing the jointly held lands as well as transferring their father's real estate to them. Firstly, John K. White conveyed to Enoch White "all the lands that said Enoch White and myself own and occupy by Point Deed except the Barber Lot so called and what the said Enoch White has by deed this day conveyed to me. $2,000." Then Sylvester White conveyed to John K. White "that piece of land deeded to me by Elisha Cleaveland and part of lot #168 containing 37 acres and a half. Also lot #178 containing 100 acres deeded to me by Robert Barone. Also the west half of Lot 120 containing 50 acres deeded to me by Benjamin Holmes (collector). ... Meaning to convey by this deed all the lands I now own in the town of Georgia. $2,000." Then Enoch White conveyed to John K. White "my undivided half of land deeded to John K. and myself by Hezekiah Keeler Nov. 19 1836. Also one undivided half of a piece of land beginning at the southeast corner of lands owned by Thaddeus Cook . . . $2,000.
On that same date Enoch and John K. leased to Sylvester and Sarah White for their natural lives all lands deeded to John K. White by Sylvester White, also the south 50 acres bought from Lyman Hill by Enoch White and John K. White and deeded that day to Enoch. John K. and Enoch agreed to provide them food and pay their doctor's bills, store bills, and taxes for all their natural lives. In return Sylvester deeded them all his land.

In 1850 he is listed as age 54, a farmer with $3,500 of land, born in Vermont. Listed with him is his wife, Adaline (51), Ann (15), Adelbert (13), Elisah (10), and Abi (8). Listed next to them is Leonard Tisdel (38) and his family, apparently Adaline’s brother. Also nearby on pg 41 is the family of Hermon Hill with his widowed mother(?) Polly, age 54. Before him are children Levi C. White (3), and Edward White (7mos) who appear to be listed with the John Harrin family for some unknown reason.
After the land division, Enoch owned and lived on the farm on the lake shore, and the 1857 Walling map and the 1871 Beers Atlas map both show his residence here. In the 1860 Agricultural Census he is listed as owning 150 acres improved and 50 acres unimproved, with a value of $7,000. He had 23 milk cows, one other cow, one horse and four pigs and produced during the year 60 tons of hay, 1200 lbs. butter, 600 lbs. cheese, 200 lbs. maple sugar, 118 bu. wheat, 40 bu. Indian corn, 300 bu. oats, 20 bu. beans and 400 bu. potatoes.

Enoch's father, Sylvester White, died Feb. 12 1857 and a court battle over his will ensued. The will, dated Feb. 14 1856, made bequests of $50 to his three surviving daughters, and left the rest of the estate to his son John Kinney and members of John Kinney's family. Enoch was not mentioned, nor were the children of his deceased daughter Luana. The will was presented Mar. 5 1857. On Mar. 27 1857 the hearing to approve the will was postponed until Apr. 23, at which time the witnesses to the will were examined and the will was disallowed by the Probate Court. John K. White was appointed executor and ordered to make an inventory. On Apr. 28 John K. petitioned the Probate Court, (Whereas on the 23rd of Apr. 1857, the will of Sylvester White was disallowed) "I, John K. White of Georgia, considering myself aggrieved at said decree do hereby pray to be allowed an appeal therefrom to the next stated session of the County Court within and for the County of Franklin." On Apr. 30 the petition was granted and John K. White was directed to notify Enoch White of Georgia. On May 22 the case of John K. White vs. the Heirs of Sylvester White was decided in County Court;
'I... The appeal of John K. White from the order and decree of said probate court, made on the 23rd day of Apr. A.D. 1857, disallowing and setting aside an instrument purporting to be the last will and testament of Sylvester White, late of Georgia in said District, deceased, was duly entered in said Franklin County Court and at this Apr. term of said County Court the issue of fact joined in said appeal has been tried according to the rules of law by a Jury under the direction of the Court and the above mentioned instrument, purporting to be the last will and testament of the said Sylvester White is thereupon determined proved and allowed to be the last will and testament of the aforesaid Sylvester White and the costs of this appeal are allowed to the said John K. White at the sum of twenty nine dollars and eighty nine cents."
On July 2 1857 an inventory of notes and money was returned by B.B. Nelson, special administrator, with a total of $680.40 and the notation, "Received the above of J.K. White as all the property of Sylvester White's Estate in his keeping." On July 5 1858 the Warrant to Commissioners states, "Whereas John K. White, Executor of the last will and testament of Sylvester White late of Georgia deceased, hath represented to said court that the estate of said deceased is insolvent and insufficient to pay all the just debts which the deceased owed" and appoints commissioners to advertise and make a listing of debts. On Feb. 15 1859 the Commissioners' Report lists just one debt of $76.78 to E.P. Cleaveland. The court record ends on May 3 1859 with the Executor's Account;
"Whereas it appears from the files and records of this court and from the last will and testament of Sylvester White, late of Georgia, deceased, that the executor John K. White is the residuary legatee of said estate and it further appearing from the inventory and appraisal that all the special legacies could be paid in full and still leave a large balance in the hands of the said executor which according to the provision of the will of the said testator becomes the absolute property of the Executor aforesaid, and the said executor by paying all the legal charges of settling said estate, the legacies and the allowances of Commissioners, renders unnecessary a detailed account of his doings and the sums thus paid out. Therefore it is ordered by said court that no specific account be required of the said executor and that on satisfactory proof being furnished this court of the payment of all legacies, debts and charges against said estate, he be discharged from all further duties and liabilities as Executor aforesaid."
The Court decision to require no accounting by the executor leaves us in the dark as to the size of the estate, characterized as insufficient to pay the debts in one court document and as leaving a large balance in the hands of the executor in another. We do know that Sylvester had already disposed of his real estate in 1845 so the balance would be in other assets. The dry summaries of the court proceedings also leave us with no clear understanding of the cause or extent of the family dissension.
Soon after the settling of the estate John Kinney White and his family left Vermont. On Feb. 29th 1860 John K. and Ady White sold to Enoch and his son William T. White all their land in Georgia, in all 265 acres, for $5,500, with payments of $500 due each year from 1861 through 1870 and $314 in 1871. Enoch and William held John Kinney's farm for only four years, selling all but 55 acres of it to Russell Goodwin on Mar. 13 1865 for $4,200.
By the time of the 1860 census all of Enoch and Adaline's children had left home. Adaline had died in 1857, leaving Enoch living on the farm with his daughter-in-law Mary Lucretia Leonard White, wife of his son Enoch J., and her two sons Mortimer Selwin and James Elwin. On July 11 1866 Enoch deeded "all the land I now own in Georgia . . . supposed to contain in all 250 acres more or less. Also all personal property on the premises" to Mary L. White, Mortimer S. White and James E. White for the sum of $6,000. There were conditions attached to the sale. First, Enoch would have sole control and possession during his life; second, Mary, Mortimer and James E. "shall, after my decease, own and occupy in equal shares during the natural life of Mary and shall not have the right to sell to any other person unless they all agree to sell together; third, "If Mary L. remarries Mortimer and James E. have the right to buy her out for one third of the value."
On Feb. 14 1871 Congress passed an act declaring a pension of eight dollars per month for veterans of the War of 1812. On Mar. 17, 1871 Enoch filed an application for this pension. His application states that he was drafted in Captain Eldridge Wood's Company at Georgia, VT on the first day of Sept. 1813 and was honorably discharged at Plattsburgh, NY on Nov. 17 1813. It further states "He served under Gen. Fassett. He went as a substitute for his father, Sylvester White. He served about 3 months after which he was discharged as above mentioned. He served at Chazy, NY and at Plattsburgh, NY and has received his Bounty Land Warrant for the above service." His application was rejected on Mar. 17 1873 "by reason of service alleged having been performed by the principal, whose name appears on the rolls." Sylvester White did apply for and receive bounty land warrants for service in the War of 1812. No further evidence is available as to who actually did serve.
Adaline died Oct. 26 1857 and Enoch died intestate on June 28, 1877 both in Georgia, VT. They are buried in Georgia Plains Cemetery. Franklin County Probate records show Orin C. Hubbard being appointed administrator on Nov. 20 1880 but there are no further probate records surviving.
