Barbara Harriett Darnell, was born January 2, 1923, in Webster City, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Mamie (Johnston) Moats. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth, graduating from Webster City High School "Class of 1941". She graduated from Webster City Junior College in 1943 and attended Iowa State Teacher's College at Cedar Falls. Barbara taught in rural schools of Hamilton County, Marshalltown and Albion, from 1943 to 1952. She also taught in Kamrar, Blairsburg and Williams from 1966 to 1974.
Barbara was married to Charles Greenwood of Marshalltown from 1950 to 1957 and to this union, there were three children: Kenneth, George and Mary.
Barbara was employed by People's Natural Gas Co.; Dr. J. W. Jones, Chiropractor; Drs. Olson & Brauer, Optometrists; Brin Furniture Store; Hahne Printing Co. and the New Castle Inn.
On November 19, 1978, Barbara married Harold O. Darnell of San Diego. The couple lived in San Diego until his retirement and in 1982, they moved to Springdale, AR. Harold preceded her in death in 1998.
Barbara passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City, at the age of 87 years. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John Moats and William Moats and a great niece, Peggy Moats.
Survivors include her children: Kenneth Greenwood and wife Barbara of Eagle Grove, George Greenwood and wife Lynn of Springdale, AR and Mary Schmidt and husband David of Woolstock; 5 grandsons; 2 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Virginia Moats of Park Rapids, MN and her children:Janis (Roger)Henderson, Ruth (John) Clauer, Jim (Stephanie) Moats and Robbie (Laurie)Moats and their families; 8 step children and their families: Richard Darnell of Arizona, Mark Darnell of Washington, John Darnell of Nebraska, Patrick Darnell of California, Thomas Darnell of Texas, Charles Darnell of California, Todd Darnell of Texas and Erin Darnell Frankel of California and several other family and friends.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 9, 2010, 1:00 p.m. at Graceland Cemetery in Webster City with Pastor Peter Mueller officiating.
