He was listed as widowed when he was (re)married to Mary P. Salman in 1908, and they were listed in Bedford, IN in the 1910 census with a boarder and John owning his own Dry Goods shop.
By 1920 they had moved to Marion, IN where John (43, IN) and Mary (35, PA) had her mother Ida C. Salman (70, SWE) living with them in addition to a woman and her daughter boarders. It lists Ida as widowed, immigrated from Sweden in 1876 and naturalized in 1898.
