Misc. Notes
Believed to be the “intelligent man” referred to in G. Washington’s Diary 25 Sept 1784. Also in early Maryland court records in the Digges murder case. His age is re-established from this record. Gave land for the first Catholic Church in Westminster, MD. Owned tavern in Westminster.
John was born in Baltimore to William Logsdon "Indentured Servant" (b.1663, d.1730) and Mary Honora O'Flynn "Captive Maiden" (b.1680, d.1741).
His father was born in England, immigrated in 1674 as an indentured servant. He became a plantation owner growing tobacco. He "purchased" his spouse Mary O'Flynn when she was kidnapped from Ireland and brought to Maryland to be sold as a bride. She cost one hogshead of tobacco.
John served in 1757 during the French and Indian War; Rank: Private; Unit: Capt. Thomas Norris's Company. His occupation was Surveyor.
In 1780 John donated 14 acres to the church which was to be named St. John's Church. Many suggest John and his wife are both buried in the Saint John Catholic Churchyard on the land that they donated to the church.
John married Margaret "Mary" Wooley (b.1717, d.1781) on 9 Oct 1735 in Maryland. She was the daughter of John Wooley (b.1680, d.1747) and Elizabeth Baker (b.1684, d.1757) of Concord, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.
His death is reported to have been in "Fanney's Meadow", Frederic Co., Maryland.
