Gladys was from a family of 5, with only 3 of them still left. She also lost a stillborn child in the 50’s, besides her 3 children.
In 2015 she was still living alone, with the help of son Jim and his wife.
Gladys turned 100 February 13, 2016. They had a small gathering. In April 2016 she went to a care center in Solon, Iowa, a small town about 12 miles north of Iowa City.

Gladys M. Wells, age 102 lifetime resident of the Iowa City area died peacefully, Monday, December 31, 2018 at the Solon Care Center.
Gladys M. Dewey was born February 13, 1916, in rural Johnson County, Iowa the daughter of Albert and Carrie (Fout) Dewey. She attended rural schools here and later she was united in marriage to James Emory Wells on March 15, 1934, here in Iowa City. She raised her children, cared for her family’s needs and so loved being wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother!
Her family includes her children, Jim and his wife, Ann Wells; Mary Wells and Carolyn Mather; 4 grandchildren, Stacy, Sara, Gary and Cindy; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and Gladys’s sister, Doris Lynch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emory; 2 grandchildren, Jerry and Cheryl; 4 sisters, Anne Snyder, Alice Hahn, Mary Donovan and Nellie Donovan and 1 brother, Lawrence Dewey.
Funeral services will be held at 10am Saturday, January 5, 2018, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service with burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. There will be an hour of visitation prior to the services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in her memory to Iowa City Meals on Wheels or Solon Retirement Village Foundation. James Emory Wells, 86, of 1025 E. Bloomington St, died Wednesday, Nov 25, 1998, at Mercy Hospital after a brief illness.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the George L. Gay Funeral Home & Crematorium with the Rev. Richard Paulus officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to James Emory Wells Memorial Fund.
Mr. Wells was born May 18, 1912, in rural Johnson County to Ernest Emory and Mary Dell (Hanna) Wells. He attended West Branch and rural Johnson County schools. He married Gladys Dewey on March 15, 1934, in Iowa City. He was a farmer near Iowa City and West Branch. He later worked at the Johnson County Creamery, the Kalona Creamery and the Littrels Hatchery until his retirement in 1978. He was a resident of the Lone Tree Care Center since February 1998. He was a member of the West Branch United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Jim and Ann Wells of Iowa City; two daughters, Carolyn J. Mather of Iowa City and Mary D. Wells of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. His twin brother, Eldon Wells, died earlier.
