By 1910 he was married 2 years and listed as a farmer (35, IA) with no children, although Dell (34, IA) was pregnant with a first child, who didn’t survive.
In 1920 he is listed with his wife and twin sons, renting and working as a day laborer.
His business card listed him as “E. E. Wells - Breeder of Short Horn Cattle and Chester White Hogs, Lone Tree, Iowa Route 1.”

Funeral Services over the remains of Earnest Wells, who died Saturday at his home, north of town, were held at 2 o’clock this afternoon from the home, with short services at the grave here, by Rev Davis, of the Christian church. The deceased is survived by his wife and two small twin sons, two brothers, Edward Wells of Downey, Ledger Wells of Lavern, Minn., and two sisters, Mrs. Burley Davis of Northern Iowa, and Mrs. Lottie Irwin of Liberty.

Ernest Emory Wells was born on a farm in Johnson County on April 16, 1875 and passed away at his home near Iowa City on March 10, 1922 after a short illness from pneumonia. His boyhood days were spent in the vicinity of his birthplace. When six years old he moved with his parents to a farm in Muscatine county where he grew to manhood. On Feb 5, 1908 he was united in marriage with Miss Dell Hanna of West Liberty who survives him with their twin sons, Eldon and Emory. One child died in infancy. Besides the widow and children, he leaves two sisters; Mrs. S.R. Davis of Spencer and Mrs. Lottie Irwin of West Liberty and two brothers; J. E. Wells of Downey and L. J. Wells of Winnebago, Minnnesota, the latter being unable to attend the funeral. He was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother, Charles, who died in early childhood. He was loved most by those who knew him best.
The funeral services were held at Iowa City on Monday afternoon and the body was brought to West Liberty for burial at Oakridge Cemetery.
