“After the death of the father and mother, James took his sisters, Nancy, Mary and Jane, to Illinois to live with their Uncle Isaac, but Mary soon returned to Indiana. James took care of his sisters and brothers that remained here [Columbus, IN] until they were able to care for themselves. Jane and Nancy married in Illinois.
James Wells, 21 in 1862, was listed on the draft list as a teacher, one leg amputated.
James W. Wells married Fannie Pyatt of Bartholomew Co, Indiana (who had also lost her parents at a young age) in that county on Jan 30, 1878. They are listed in Columbus, IN with John Wells (4) their nephew, son of Hiram, in 1880; along with several boarders. James is listed as age 37. “James W. Wells was a graduate of Hartsville College. He was nominated for the office of county auditor at the first primary ever held in this county. While he was auditor the present courthouse was built. After his term of office had expired, he engaged in the furniture and undertaking business. Later he was appointed as deputy auditor under J. C. Laughlin, Louie Donhost, John Sharp, George Pence, I. B. Barrett and others. At the death of Mr. Barrett he was appointed to fill the vacancy. In 1898, after serving this county for about thirty years as auditor, deputy auditor and superintendant of schools, he went to Monroe county where he was deputy auditor for three years, and then to Shelby county for two years, serving in the same capacity. When he had finished his work in these counties, he returned here and entered a real estate and abstract office. He was thus employed at the time of his death in 1906.“
