Lemuel Wells enlisted at Olney, IL on 29 Dec 1863 as a Private with Company D, 5th Regmt Illinois Volunteer Cavalry in the Civil War and was discharged at Mound City on 31 May 1965. The next year he applied for an invalid pension, due to an injury of his left leg which resulted from sickness in July of 1864 and later treated at McPherson hospital Vicksburg, MS. He was described as bieng 5’ 10.5” and 237 lbs, blue eyes.
In 1880 he is listed with the family of his sister, Sarah Clem in Clay City, Clay Co IL as 41 and working on the farm and disabled. That year a series of affidavits were submitted, substantiating his disability and injury while in the military, resulting in his pension benefits of $6/mo being approved. A small group of people also sent a challenge to his pension in 1882, and stated that he was living in Marion Co, IL. A later application for a pension increase in 1892 indicates he was then living in Niantic, Macon Co, IL. The increase was initially approved, then rejected in 1893 and reapproved in 1897.
In 1900 and 1910 he is living with his sister Sarah A Clem, and her daughter Mary J. 1910 census lists her age as 81 widow, Mary J 48 and single, and Lemuel 71 and single.
Following his death, Mary J. Clem filed a petition for the remainder of his benefits for funeral expenses, stating that he was a bachelor and left no widow or children.
