After marriage Joseph engaged in the blacksmith trade for a year at Hobart, then bought a farm at Kortright Center and lived in a log cabin and “cleaned” the land. Later Joseph and his wife moved to a farm at Meredith where he was listed in the 1860 census as a farmer (40, NY) with Agnes (34, NY) and children Esther (14), David E. (12), James (6) and William R. (4). Later (1866) they moved back to Walton and bought the old Alexander Tweedie farm on West Brook (later he bought a farm near Frear Hollow, Walton.)
Listed as a farmer (52, NY) with wife Agness (49, NY) in 1870, with children James (16), William R. (14) and Milton M. (4). Listed as a farmer (68) in 1880 census with his wife Agnes (66).
George, a younger son, stayed at home and kept the original home farm when he married. The Kilpatricks raised cattle. Some Kilpatricks joined the Reformed Presbyterian Church because of the need to sell milk on Sunday.

Misc. Notes
After her mother died, Agnes was raised by an uncle David Mitchell/McWilliams and/or Mrs. McWilliams, who may have been born a Mitchell. After Joseph’s death, Agnes made her home with her son Edwin’s family. In 1910 she is listed as age 89, and widowed with only 4 of her 7 children living.
By 1920 Edwin had died, and she is living with his widow Euphemia Tweedie Kilpatrick (72, Scotland) who immigrated in 1851 and was naturalized in 1873. Agnes is listed as age 98.
One family story reports she was an invalid for 57 years, photographs suggest otherwise.
