He was a teacher and proofreader for the press, as well as the inventor of the principal used for shearing broadcloth using water power. He married Harriet Smith of Providence, RI, patented his inventions in the USA and went to England to open letters of patent for it there as well, where he died. Harriet returned to Rhode Island.
