Misc. Notes
He was a clothier, farmer and also had flouring mills. He settled at a place known as Silltown in North Lyme, CT where he carried on and expanded the business of manufacturing and dressing of cloth founded by his father. He was a Captain in the Militia. In 1794 Capt. Mathew Dorr with second wife, Lydia Wood and their 5 children set out on a journey of removal to Southern Ohio. On reaching Pennsylvania, news of Indian depredations in Ohio made it expedient to delay their journey for 12 months. They then resumed their journey and succeeded in reaching Marietta on the Ohio River. But finding the Indian troubles revived, they took shelter in the stockade at that place, where they delayed until a definite treaty of peace was settled with the Indian tribes. They proceeded to the plaoe of their destination - Washington Co., Ohio and finally removed to a place known as Wolf's Plains, near the present village of Athens, Ohio where he died Sept. 18, 1801 and where she died Dec. 8, 1813.
The Wolf's Plains Cemetery is now known as Hocking Cemetery on the map. Most people think Capt. Matthew is buried there, but there never was a marker, and a paper found among a Dorr descendant's possessions, says that Capt. Matthew was actually buried in a cemetery called Davis Cemetery, which no longer exists, but was once across the road a little ways from the Wolf's Plains Cemetery. Unfortunately, there's no way to know for sure.
PLACE: Wolf’s Plains was named for Christopher Wolf, who married Rhoda Dorr (they moved to Haydenville, in Hocking Co, where they both died and are buried.) It later was renamed to its current name of “The Plains”.
