Lloyd Mowry's last name is spelled as "Mowery" in several newspapers; however the Ohio Death Index lists it as Mowry. He was a resident of Fredericktown, Knox County, OH.
The Knox-Vernon Speedway was located in nearby Mt. Vernon. The 1/3-mile dirt oval had been open for three years. In the first race on this Sunday evening, Mowry's modified stock car hit a wheel that came off another race car while going through the northeast turn. His car rose up into the air, came down and was struck by two other competitors. It did not turn over. It looked like a relatively minor accident. However, Mowry's seat belt evidently broke, allowing his head to strike one of the roll bars.
Taken to Memorial Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Lloyd Mowry succumbed to his head injuries the next morning. He was survived by his parents. He married Linda Durbin in 1958 but nothing else is known about him or his family. Additional information about Mowry, his family and his racing career is welcomed by Motorsport Memorial. The fatality was the first in the 3-year history of the track.
