J. W. Leppert, Bus Line Operator, Dies 2 Year Illness Fatal to Local Business Man--Funeral Friday
James W. Leppert, 53, owner and operator of Leppert Bus Lines and in business here for 33 years died at 1:30 o'colck this morning at the county hospital. Ill for two years, Mr. Leppert was admitted to the hospital 10 days ago. He lived at 224 Nineteenth street. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Hathaway funeral home conducted by the Rev. James L. Stoner. Burial will be made at Garland Brook cemetery. Casket will be open at the funeral home after noon Thursday.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Wanda Leppert; two daughters Mrs. Robet Timbrook and Miss Susan Leppert; his mother, Mrs. Lillie W. Leppert of Columbus, his father, D. W. Leppert of Asbury Park, N. J., and three granddaughters Kimberlee, Marlene and Gina Timbrook. Mr. Leppert belonged to the Christian church, Elks club, Columbia club of Indianapolis and the Masonic lodge. He married Miss Wanda Coffey of Nashville Dec. 24, 1927.
He was graduated from Columbus High school in 1920 and entered business for himself in 1924 with the establishment of the Columbus-Bloomington bus lines, which he continued for 12 years. In 1927 he bought the Schaefer Rotts garage on Fourth street chnanging it to the Leppert Service garage. He started a bus route from Seymour to Salem which he operated for 10 years, and in 1932 Mr. Leppert bought the city bus Lines from Public Service company, establishing the Leppert Bus Lines of Columbus. Leppert Lines were also formerly operated by Mr. Leppert in Peru, Wabash, and Jeffersonville, and currently the Leppert company is operating busses in Columbus and Bloomington.
In 1937 he founded Leppert Auto Parts and in 1943 Mr. Leppert purchased the Charles Kinsey and Powell Chevrolet properties on Jackson street, rebuilt and moved the Greyhound Bus terminal and Leppert auto parts to the site. Since 1940 he had served in various positions on the board of directors of the Indiana Bus association.
