He registered for the WWI Draft in Detroit, Mich. on 12 Sep 1918, while living on Forest Ave with his wife Jane. He was 36 and working as rivet heater for the American Car & Refrigeration Co (railroad). He was described as medium height, slender build, with blue eyes and black hair.
He is listed as a lodger with the Bush family on 14th Ave in Detroit in 1920, married but not listed with his wife, working as a laborer for a forge company (38, IL).
He is listed back in Illinois with his brothers Henry and Jeremiah in 1930 - divorced.
By 1940 he was listed as a Painter (59, IL), living with his 2 brothers and 2 sisters, still divorced.
In 1942, his WWII Draft registration shows him at age 60, living in East St. Louis with his sister, Cora and working for a plumbing supply.
He is then listed with his brothers Jerry, Henry in 1950, as well as sisters Cora and Grace, plus Grace’s husband Will.

She was listed as Jane Wells, wife of Clarence Wells and living in Detroit when he registered for the WWI draft.
Then listed in East St. Louis for the 1920 census with her mother and brother as married, head of household (37, IL) with son Clarence R. (2, IL)
She is still listed in East St. Louis on her son’s WWII draft registration and city directories thru 1955.

Funeral Tomorrow For Jane S. Wells
In East St. Louis Funeral services for Mrs. Jane Sophia Wells, 74, of 1127 Cleveland avenue, East St. Louis, will be held at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon at the Robins Chapel there.
She died Saturday morning in St. Elizabeth's hospital. Rev. Rayburn Dunbar, pastor of the First Baptist church, East St. Louis, will officiate. Interment will be in Caseyville cemetery.
Before entering the hospital, she had been a patient at the New Athens Nursing Home.
Surviving are a son, Clarence R. Wells, teacher of Kirkwood Mo., formerly active in Boy Scout work in East St. Louis; three brothers, August "Gus" Recklein, Edward Recklein and Lee Recklein, all of East St. Louis; two grandsons.
