F.E. WALTS
Frederick E. Walts, member of a pioneer family, and a resident of Nevada for more than 80 years, died yesterday morning at a local rest home. Mr. Walts was 91 years of age.
A native of Milford, California, he was born January 9, 1873, the eldest son of William and Alice Walts. When he was about eight years of age he moved to the Truckee Meadows with his parents, who settled on the ranch south of Reno in the present area of Virginia Lake.
Mr. Walts attended local grade schools and Reno High School and graduated from the University of Nevada with a B.A. degree in 1896. Following his graduation he first entered the teaching profession and taught school in Elko, Dayton, and Austin. Returning to Reno to teach, he served as principal of Reno High School in the early 1900's.
He then left teaching and, with two brothers, Guy and Herbert Walts, purchased the ranch holdings of his parents. Until 1929 he was in the livestock and ranching business.
At that time he went in the service station business at the northeast corner of Fourth and West Streets and with his brother, Herbert, operated the station for the next 16 years, after which it was leased to another operator.
Mr. Walts then returned to agriculture, operating a truck gardening business off Dickerson Road at the Western edge of Reno until he was 80, when he retired.
Since then he had been making his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Waggoner on Dickerson Road. He had been in the rest home only a short time prior to his death.
One brother, the late Guy Walts, was Reno municipal judge for many years. Besides brothers Guy and the late Herbert Walts, he was also the brother of the late Claud Walts and Mrs. Bonnie Plath.
Mr. Walts was married to Miss Ella Zena Blakeslee (1876-1936) in Reno on 14 Jul 1897. She proceeded him in death in 1936. Her father was the first operator of Humbolt House, landmark on the railroad between Lovelock and Imlay.
Surviving him are one son, Fred C. Walts, of Los Angeles; and four daughters, Mrs. Alice Reels, Mrs. Isobel Burney and Mrs. Ralph Waggoner, all of Reno, and Mrs. Ruth Boyle of Sacramento. Also surviving are six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the family plot in the Masonic section of Mountain View Cemetery with the Reverand Edson P. Sheppard of Trinity Episcopal Church clergyman. Ross-Burke Company is in charge of arrangements.
