By 1880 Charley had left home and was working as a laborer (21, IA) and living in a boarding house in Minnesota, where he is listed as married (?), but not with any family.
Listed as a farmer in 1900 (41, WI), where it lists his father as being born "at sea". With him is wife Mary E. (Feb 1867, MI), Sally (Jul 1897, WI), Hattie (Sep 1899, WI) and it says only 3 of her 10 children are living. Also with them is a nephew, Arthur Jonston (Apr 1890, WI).
Still in Sampson in 1905 as Charles H. a farmer (46, IA) with Mary E. (38, MI), Sallie E. (7, WI), Hattie C. (5, WI) and nephew Arthur J. Johnston (15, WI) whose parents were born in Canada and Michigan. It lists Charles parents as being born in Canada and Ireland.
Listed as earning commissions on shirts in 1910 (51, IA) with his wife Mary and Sallie E. (13), Hattie C. (10) and Anna M. (4) - their 3 surviving children of 4.
In 1920 he's listed as Charley Ruttan (61, IA) a clerk in his own store, wife Mary (53, MI), and Hattie C. (20), and Anna M. (14). Living with them is his mother-in-law Christina Kuhn (77, MI). Again, it says his father was born "at sea".
He appears to be listed in 1930 as Chas Ruttan (71, IA) widowed, a shoe salesman and first married at age 33. Although his wife is still listed in New Auburn, living with their grandson, Jack Ruttan.
