Knud and Andrine were 'husmen' (hired hands on a farm). They were extremely poor, and Ludwig always said that there was barely enough food to keep body and soul together. Their main meal was 'mush' and they had only one egg a year, on Easter. Percy wrote that Knud (Ludwig's father) passed away in Norway about 1875.
