Knud and Andrine were 'husmen' (hired hands on a farm).  They were extremely poor, and Ludwig always said that there was barely enough food to keep body and soul together.  Their main meal was 'mush' and they had only one egg a year, on Easter. In 1886, they migrated to North Dakota, settling in a sod hut built into the side of a hill, near Daley, ND. (~20 miles south of Valley City, ND.)
