Joseph James “Joe” Vernetti, 79, of Cañon City, died Aug. 4, 1998, in Cañon City. He was born May 13, 1919 in Cañon City, to James and Margaret (Giovannini) Vernetti.
Mr. Vernetti was born in the Four Mile area. The family moved to Brewster and started farming. He helped his father wish vegetable gardening and also started their dairy farm, which he later expanded to 200 acres and a large dairy herd with the help of his wit and children. In 1969, he sold the farm and moved to Cañon City. He attended schools in Brewster and graduated from Holy Cross Abbey in 1937. He was a member of the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
On Oct. 10, 1939, in Florence, he married Hazel Jean Wells, who survives. He is also survived by children: James H. (Nancy) Vernetti, Patricia Jo (Joe) Rampone, Joseph Daniel Vernetti, Charles Andrew (Rosann) Vernetti, Lawrence George (Kim) Vernetti, Margaret Jean “Peggy” (Kenneth) Meisner, all of Cañon City, John Jerome Vernetti of Denver; aunts: Katherine Giovannini, Clotilda Globoker, a sister-in-law, Harriette Vernetti, two step-grandsons, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Charles Joseph Vernetti, a son Phillip Stephen, a daughter, Katherine Louise, and an aunt, Lena Hall.
Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7. Both services will be at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church with Father Michael Murray, OSB officiating. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery.
