He is listed simply as J. T. Wells, a farmer (55, PA) in 1940, with wife Eva (54, PA) and a lodger. He and Eva both show as having completed the 8th grade.

WELLS, JONTY TOWNSEND - Age 88 years, of Scenery Hill R. D. 1, died in Washington Hospital Monday, April 9, 1973. He was born March 1, 1885, in Jefferson Twp., son of James S. and Mary Stuckslager Wells. He was a member of Fairview Methodist Church and was a retired farmer. He was predeceased by his wife, Eva Ford Wells, Feb. 26, 1942, and one daughter, Mary Ellen. Surviving are four sisters; Adah Lay of Huntington Valley, Mae Forsythe of Uniontown, Elizabeth Clark of Scenery Hill & Clara Wells of Grindstone; two brothers; Willie H. Wells of Perryopolis, Robert of Grindstone.
Friends will be received after 2 p.m. today in the Greenlee Funeral Home, Beallsville. Viewing from 12 noon Wednesday until 2 p.m., the hour of service in the Fairview Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Fowler officiating. Interment in Fairview Cemetery.
