After their marriage in Iowa, they are listed in the 1930 Dixon census with Samuel (24, IL) working as a weaver in a wire screen factory, with his wife Mamie (22, IL) and son Samuel R. Jr (4 mos) at home.
In 1940 he is listed as a threader (34, IL) for Reynolds wire, Mamie (32, IL) taking care of the two boys, Samuel (10, IL) and Wayne (6, IL).

Rochelle - Samuel R. Wells, 69, 1012 N. Hennepin Ave., died in KSB Hospital Friday morning after a long illness. He was born Nov. 20, 1905, in Atlanta, the son of John F. and Jeanette (Hauger) Wells, and was married to the former Mamie Dwyer, June 15, 1929, in Clinton, Iowa. Wells was employed by Sieg-Illinois Company before retiring. Survivors include his widow; two sons, Sam Jr., Nachusa, and Wayne Richard, Belvedere; three sisters. Miss Clare Wells and Mrs. Julia McMahon, both of Dixon, and Mrs. Emma Jean Buck, Peoria; two brothers, Clyde, Pecatonica, and Warren, Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Chapel Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Merle Hall of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Park. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home, where the family will be present from 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial fund has been established.
